WordBound Challenge #3

There was a door.

It was closed.

The outside, Vanessa mused, seemed intricate enough so it would be difficult to figure out, to be tampered with. She had no doubt, though, that there was no lock or handle from the inside. No, that would be too easy, too convenient.

The locked door did little to muffle the sounds from within.

However subdued, it was unpleasant.

And unmistakably familiar.

The knowledge that there was nothing she could do, no way to help out the poor girl within that room—

Torturing— they were torturing her—

Vanessa grit her teeth, barely keeping herself under control. It would do nothing to lash out at them. Not when it would make things worse for that girl. Not when there was nobody to lash out to. They were but faceless puppets, no doubt following orders from someone else. No, it would not do anything but offer her brief satisfaction.

She had no doubt they were coming up with new ways to try to break them, every day. And it would soon be her turn. Yet Vanessa couldn’t bring herself to feel afraid— not for herself, anyway. But for the girl behind that door, that she had never even seen. Had only heard her voice quake and plead and crack as they tore her apart, again and again in that room of horrors, with God-knows-what things they used upon her mind and body.

That they would soon use upon her.

Behind that door, they would all break eventually. Of that, they were sure of.

But Vanessa was not afraid.

WordBound Challenge #2

It took a lot of time to figure out the best way to do it.

A lot of precise, calculated movements from her part. Avery thought if perhaps this was a challenge in itself, but there was no point thinking like that. That, and she was running out of time. By now, she knew of the routine checkups they foolishly tried to pass off as random; she had enough time to observe each and every person that went through her room, what each one’s purpose was. Two nurses to check on her in the morning. One to escort her in the dining hall, where the others would already be there, as she was in the farthest quarters. Kept away from the rest, as if she was contaminated.

Avery was, after all, the most dangerous one.

That precaution had proven to be quite useless. Of course, nobody needed to know that. It was something she herself had trouble grasping very well, still.

Everyone turned to look as Avery was led in the room, a small smirk forming on her lips as she surveyed them back. This, she could do without a hitch. Let those bastards shackling her see her as detached and arrogant, careless. Then nobody would suspect when she striked.

Avery’s smirk widened, turning to a grin. “My eyes are up here, loves. You’ve already seen it all.”

That seemed to snap her friends out of their daze. Slowly, everyone’s attention shifted back to the food in front of them. All but one’s.

Avery turned to look at the girl, Ellie, who was still staring at her, unmoving; waiting. Avery approached her friend, carefully angling her back against the cameras monitoring the common room. She brushed a hand on her friend’s shoulder, and then, in one swift motion, a tiny parchment of paper slipped from her white sleeve, onto Ellie’s lap. Just as quickly, Ellie’s thighs closed ever so slightly, effectively hiding it from plain sight. Avery squeezed her shoulder once, briefly, and sat across Ellie, grin still in place. No time was wasted.

Her part, for the time being, was complete.

WordBound Challenge #1

Yes, I’m aware I’m very, very late for this. Am I gonna let that stop me? Who knows!

Hello everyone!

I decided to take part in this prompt challenge, and I have quite a bit of catching up to do. Buckle in with me, because this is gonna take a while.

The first prompt of the challenge is fairly simple.

My personal writing goals for 2017 all zero down to one thing;

I want to write.

I want to break down the wall of insecurities in my head, let myself flow through words and characters. I want to lose touch with reality. Because reality is boring, and burdensome, and quite honestly overrated.

I am hoping #wordbound will help me out of my writing slump, whether it be with blog posts or novel writing.

Hopefully, it will be both.

Pre-Camp NaNoWriMo thoughts & getting into BookTube

Because putting this in written form may actually motivate me enough to do both things mentioned above.

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while, again. So much for me being more active this time around. But you know how life gets, ey? Haha…I have no excuses I’m sorry

*sips -now- cold coffee nervously*

BUT let’s think about it this way: I am back just in time to procrastinate participate in Camp NaNo!

I can’t believe it’s been a year since Harris, Chels and I started this whole blogging thing back on our main site. Time flies, yet here we are again. Sometimes Nanowrimo and its Camps are pretty much the only solid things in my life. It’s no wonder it feels like home, more so than other things.

This time, though, I’ll try to step up my game and actually, actively participate in both written and video form. It’s in no way a solid promise, but for the time being it is good enough for me.

Which brings me on the topic of BookTube. It’s no secret that I’ve been meaning to do this for quite some time now (quite not beginning to cover it, honestly). And yet, something stops me every time, whether it be inexperience or simply fear of failure. I’m never good with spoken words, always preferring writing it out over talking. But we all gotta start from somewhere, right? I wasn’t always that good at writing either (I’m still not) but there has definitely been some progress. So in the end, what’s really the problem? Why keep looking for excuses and not just say, DAMN THE CONSEQUENCES, I’LL DO WHATEVER I LIKE WHETHER ANYONE ELSE LIKES IT OR NOT!

Honestly? Nothing but my own insecurities.

That’s what I want the next month to be. To be more general, I would like to be active on both platforms as there are quite a lot of things to talk about and there is, ultimately, no reason why I should not. So there’s that to look forward to.

This was quite short, and I’ve used the word quite more than I should, but hey! Better than potatoing (yes, it is now a legit word) and avoiding this again.

Let’s all have a very productive month and a happy Camp NaNo!

My Top Favourite Songs of 2016 [K-Pop Ver.]

Happy (late) New Year everyone!

How has 2017 been treating you so far? For me, it started out rather nicely, which I’m glad.

Now, a few weeks ago I mentioned I might make a list about the best things that happened in 2016, but came a little too short on answers. I may still do it later on, but I figured to start off with something lengthier. And thus, I decided to make a list of my favourite songs of 2016.

Warning: Literally all of it is k-pop, because I’ve listened to nothing else this past year. Therefore, if this bothers you, or if you’re not interested or whatnot, don’t scroll ahead because you won’t find anything you like. On the other hand, if you want to listen to k-pop and don’t know where to start, or if you just already like it, then proceed scrolling.

For this, I figured I should do something like “top 16 songs of 2016” to make it look nice, but quickly realized the list is…a lot…longer than 16 songs. With that being said, here’s my top favourite songs that came out in 2016.

NaNoWriMo, K-Pop, Christmas

*looks around*

*approaches slowly*

*clears throat*

Hi there.

S’been a while, hasn’t it? Last time I posted was more than a month ago, heh. How are y’all? How’s life treating you?

For those of you who took part in NaNoWriMo, how did you do? Did you win? Are you getting there?

As for me…you can say that I tried. I really, really did. I reached halfway, and I count that as winning enough. But yeah, better luck next year for me.

(And of course there’s always Camp! Can’t forget that.)

I feel like this whole year was so…off for most people. From beginning to end. And in my case, it affected November/NaNo too. Of course it hadn’t all been bad there. I got to figure out my story better, practice outlining, and felt like it was going somewhere for a little while. Plus, I made so many new friends through the contest, and so many more people got into it, doing what they love most for the whole month. Not to mention I was an ML in my region for this year. At least I hope I did a good job there?

Nevertheless, I’m trying not to let any of that get me down. With the end of the year just around the corner, I’m trying to make a mental (and actual) list of all the good things that happened throughout 2016. And I may or may not post it here, as a reminder. Granted, I should have probably done that throughout the whole year, but now I can actually sit back and evaluate everything that has happened.

NaNo wasn’t the only reason I’ve made so many friends this year. Another reason, probably the main one, was kpop.

Really, I’d been putting this off for at least 3 years *snorts* it was about time I officially jumped on this bandwagon. And I have, and I don’t regret a thing.

Because honestly…it’s been a while since something has made me this happy. I never actually thought of myself as someone who depended on music and artists as much, and I kinda always envied whoever would put so much energy and time into the music they liked, because it felt like I would never connect with music the way others did, would never find myself through it. Until now.

And I’m glad I got into this, I made so many friends in the span of just a few months, and got to connect with myself and others the way I always hoped to.

But ah, this whole subject needs a separate post, because I could go on for a while about both music and language.

*makes mental note for next post*

And I mean…Christmas is almost here. This is a good enough reason for me to be happy. Maybe not like 10-year-old me was happy, but it still cheers me up. Some things have still not changed. The feeling of getting together with your favourite family members, the presents and the food and the decorations. It may sound silly, but I’m looking forward to these still. To whatever makes me happy, however little.

Have fun in the holidays, whatever you celebrate! I promise to be around a lot more these days, and during December.

What are the little things that make you happy in life? Hold onto them as much as you can 🙂

Halloween & Planning for October 2016

Hello everyone!

The month has changed. Today is Halloween the 3rd! Are you excited? I sure am.

What do you mean Halloween isn’t a whole month. What do you mean we don’t celebrate it here. I don’t understand.

I would say it’s time to take out my spooky Halloween decorations, but to be honest with you…I never really took them down. They’ve kinda been there, for a full year. I’m not the only one that did this, right? *looks around hopefully*

What I am looking forward to do, though, is getting all the good sweets and finding more stuff to put up and never take down. Oh, and make my Halloween Movie List. I’m sure you all know what that means, right? Personally, I can’t get enough of watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus or The Addams Family every Halloween. They’re on the top of The List. (And I’m going to listen to Spooky Scary Skeletons on repeat because I can.)

Despite all the spooky prep, planning has to be included in there too.

The road to NaNoWriMo is almost set. You begin to organize your novel (or try to), make a basic outline of the plot you are hoping to get by the end of the month, and begin prepping. Of course, that is easier said. But you gotta start from somewhere. Each to their own pace, but we’re all in it to win it. I will try to update the blog with story stuff as soon as I get a good hold of my plot.

So, the two goals of this month are prepping for Halloween and prepping for NaNoWriMo. It sounds more exciting when you have to do both, doesn’t it? Especially since Halloween ends right when NaNo begins. Can you tell I’m excited? I am, in fact, incredibly excited.

Also, I’m sorry if the skeleton gif scared you. That was not my intention.

🎃 Have fun and get your spook on! 🎃

Preppin’ up for NaNoWriMo 2016

Hello, hello!

As you all know, October is almost upon us. And for once, I’m excited for the cold. Of course, you’ve got a handful of things to look forward to, like pumpkin spice latte (which I don’t drink, but still), Halloween (which we don’t celebrate in Greece, but still), fuzzy socks, cozy sweaters, warm blankets, hot chocolate, and so on.

What worries me, however, is the prep for November.

I will be taking part in this year’s NaNoWriMo, of course. Even when I had no chances to win I never missed it. And now, as a writer and a new ML of my region, I feel the need to get on this bandwagon the same way as last year, head-first. It worked last year, didn’t it? I won the contest for the first time ever. Plus, now our region has more ML’s and we can reach out to more people and expand our writing group even further. So, more writers = more meet-ups = more group motivation = more writing, right?

If you have a story to work on, that is.

Focusing on the same story as before does not feel like fulfilling the contest’s purpose, so it has to be new. Or related to your story’s world in some way. That’s what I will aim for. Not last year’s story, but background events that take part in the same universe as my story. That’s not cheating, right? Right…

So, what will my goals for autumn be? World-building, planning, and then writing. Yes, in theory, it sounds so perfect. How the hell did I do this last year? Honestly, I don’t even remember. I must have overdosed on caffeine and blacked out for most of it. Don’t you love being a writer.

But anyhow! Are any of you taking part in this year’s NaNo as well? What do you recommend for writers who are struggling to come up with a plot/basic storyline? Do you have any problems picking out what do, how to do it or focusing enough to do it?

I hope you have easy prep and writing months ahead!

Carry On: Book Review

carry-on-22

“Aleister Crowley, I’m living a charmed life.”

Even though I had this from the week it was released, I didn’t get to it right away. However, I can safely say I could not put it down once I started it, and finished it in one sitting.

THE NON-SPOILERY TALK

In case you don’t know, author Rainbow Rowell has written snippets of this before, scattered around in her other book, Fangirl. Now this is where it gets meta. In Fangirl, the main character of the book, Cath, is writing fan-fiction based on the books about Simon Snow in her world. So we get snippets of the “actual” books and of her fan-fiction. But Rainbow didn’t want to leave it at that, so she made the Simon Snow story in her world into a book and story of its own. There, technically those snippets do not count as “canon” since they were written through Cath. Therefore, you may be familiar with the idea of the story, but nothing more specific is happening. So no, there’s no need to read Fangirl before this.

Still with me? Alright, good.

So the story follows Simon Snow, a 16-year-old boy who is said to be “The Chosen One”, the one to save the Magickal world from a “great evil”, as the prophesies say. Simon Snow himself, though, sure does not feel like one. He barely acts like one too. Baz, his roommate and sworn enemy since they were 11, thinks he is “the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.” Sure, he could be the most powerful person the world has ever seen, but that mostly means he sets a lot of things on fire by accident, himself included.

Simon causes a lot more trouble by trying to help than staying out of it. So he has no control of his powers, his wand seems to hate him, and he gets to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, since he’s the Chosen One. And if all that is not enough, there is also a powerful monster on the loose, a force that nobody has ever heard of, that sucks the magic out of everything around it, human and place alike, leaving “dead” (magic-less) spots on the map.

Worst yet, it looks exactly like an 11-year-old Simon.

In this world of monsters and creatures and snobby Magicks, it’s the cherry on top. The Mage, head of the Watford School of Magicks and Simon’s mentor, is the one that found him and hid him in the school to protect him from…well…everything. But he has troubles of his own, as the powerful families in the political world try to overturn him and as there are several wars going on, and Simon is left without anyone to turn to for advice.

Plus, his arch nemesis Baz didn’t even show up for class. That always means trouble.

One thing I really liked on this story is how nicely Rainbow Rowell has mixed the “magickal” world  with the modern world. In most books I’ve read about magic and stuff, I kept seeing how anything magical tends to keep away from the normal, how magical people keep to themselves because they look down on the technological advances of the human world.

In Carry On, the magickal world depends on the normal world. It’s believed that words have power, and the more a phrase is said the more powerful it is. That’s the reason why the spells they use are actually catchphrases, common slang said over and over by humans. Or, in more powerful spells, nursery rhymes, said and passed on by generations. I hope I’m not the only one on this, but I like little details like that a lot.

That is all I can say about the plot without spoiling anything.

Carry On has a good deal of humor, sass, feels, and kissing, sprinkled with a great deal of magic and monsters.

Overall, I will give this book 4/5 stars solely because it has left quite a few questions unanswered. If you are familiar with the author’s writing, you know how she tends to do that, just in smaller bits. But judging from this book, I would say that this was intentional, and there’s another one in the making soon. At least…one can hope. One can go so long without having their dose of Simon and Baz in their life.

Lady Midnight: Book Review

12571276_1075406219149410_175510036_n1

So, I’ve written this review waaay back this year, when I first read this book in spring instead of studying. But, I figured a good way to start off this blog would be with nothing else but a Cassandra Clare book.

You’ll find out fast enough about my obsession with Cassandra Clare’s books, worry not.

THE NON-SPOILERY TALK

She took a deep breath. “You’re too skinny,” she said, as brightly as she could. “Too much coffee, not enough pancakes.”

“I hope they put that on my tombstone.”

Before reading the book, I kept seeing the same thing on every other review. “Cassie has outdone herself,” they all said. Someone even went as far as to say it’s on the same level as The Infernal Devices series. I thought, I’ll have to decide that for myself. Clockwork Princess is hard to top, after all.

Conclusion: Cassie has, indeed, outdone herself.

To start with, it certainly comes close to the amount of feels, action, plot twists and drama. We get a glimpse of some of the book’s main characters at the end of The Mortal Instruments, in City of Heavenly Fire. Perhaps that’s what helped the plot set off right away, instead of a really slow build-up. Not that there wasn’t a smooth build-up, but we did know some facts about the characters beforehand. Some we meet throughout this book. Either way, we have yet to see each person’s full potential, but we get a pretty good idea of what is yet to come.

Like all her books, it had me at the edge of my seat. Just when I thought things were starting to slow down, and I was thinking it would be a good enough bit to put the book away and pick it back up later, Cassie threw a plot twist my way that almost had me screaming my head off, bawling, fainting, or all of the above. I slipped into this world I love so much almost effortlessly. Heart wrenching, witty, beautifully written. More than once, it had me laughing out loud on scenes I absolutely shouldn’t be laughing, at the most serious situations.

In just one book, I fell in love unconditionally with all the characters, all their traits and flaws, even the ones that betrayed me in the end (*coughs quietly*). Each one was so beautifully diverse, in just the right way, and together they all fit as a whole like the pieces of a puzzle. All the Blackthorn siblings, and then from Emma, to Cristina, to Perfect Diego (you’ll understand soon), to Kieran…Gosh, I felt for them, for each one’s burdens and problems, as if they were my own.

Not to mention, each plot twist was so nicely put, so cleverly hidden in plain sight, it will have you smacking your head and going “Of course!” every time new details get revealed. After you have finished screaming and have picked yourself up from your fetal position on the floor, that is.

Plus, the cliffhanger at the end (of course there is a cliffhanger, because all the torment you have just been put through was not enough) succeeded in making me gasping for more. So, anyone that has yet to read it: It’s not going to be what you think. Better have high expectations, because Lady Midnight is going to reach, if not top them.

Have fun (*laughs*) reading it, and good luck.
